The WBC
Summer Solstice
©2001 by Anton Uhl

Coming on June 21'st is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. It is called the summer solstice. It is a day full of legend and mystery. A time of faeries and love. William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" takes place on this night.

Some interesting sites we found about the Summer Solstice:

THE SUMMER SOLSTICE
&
THE WINTER SOLSTICE
If you live on the north (top) of planet earth, the summer solstice is the longest day of the year and the winter solstice is the shortest day (and longest night) of the year.

If you live on the south of the planet, your longest and shortest days are just the opposite.

Notice how the earth is tilted.
As it goes around the sun throughout the year, the top of the planet gets more sun at one time of year (summer) and less at the opposite time of year (winter).

Until the summer solstice, the daylight lasts longer and longer each day.
After the summer solstice the daylight gets shorter and shorter each day until the winter solstice when daylight is the shortest and starts getting longer again.

Halfway between each solstice, daylight and nighttime are equal. This is called the equinox. There is one for spring (vernal equinox) and one for autumn (autumnal eauinox).
